Its been quite long since the release of Android 8.x and now many of us have been eyeing the next version of our beloved OS ‘Android’. All of us know the Google is quite systematic in naming in their Android OS. From Android 3.0 ‘Cupcake’ to Android 8.0 ‘Oreo’, the journey is quite long and systematic (get whole version history on Wikipedia). And now we have Android 9.0 ‘P’ which was announced by Google on March 7, 2018.
Android P is currently available for beta testing and only selected devices are eligible for beta updates. The list of eligible devices are as follows:
Google Pixel 2/XL
Nokia 7 Plus
Oppo R15 Pro
Sony Xperia XZ2
Xiaomi Mix 2S
Yes, there are not many devices in the list, but all the phones are flagships from their respective companies. This means in order to get early updates you have to make your pockets looser.
If you already have got any of the following devices then ‘Congratulations’ you are eligible to register for Android Developer Program. Under Android Developer Program you will get beta updates of your Android OS. The beta updates may have bugs, so think twice before registering for Program.
Android P amazing features:
Since Android P is still under development but still developers are using it. So, the features we know are:
- Added image support: Any message which contains images can be shown directly in Notifications Bar
- Save Replies as drafts
- Multi-Camera Support: Use front and rear cameras simultaneously
- Security Enhancements
- Manual rotation button
- Horizontal recent apps notification (Similar to iPhoneX)
- Slices: Allows part of the app UI to be brought right into the Google search
- Android Dashboard: Aims to help you understand your habits and promote meaningful engagement. Also gives you controls for how and when you spend time on your phone
And many more…..
Oh Yeah! There is another feature called ‘Wind Down’ which will make our device display boring to limit our screen time. Altogether, Google understands ill-effects of phones and worked a lot on that side.
Following the first beta release in March 2018, the third beta release is being sent to devices since March 7, 2018. Every release has some new features, bug fixes and much more to make your device experience more seamless.
Recently, Huawei employee accidentally revealed the name of the upcoming Android P as Android ‘Pistachio’ while answering a question of an upgrade path to a customer. Yes, the name is not official as it is not officially announced by Google itself, so there are chances of a different actual name such as Pumpkin Pie, Pecan, or maybe something else, no one knows (except google).
When will the OS release? Even we don’t know about it. So, just stay tuned. And OS with custom UI is generally released after 2 months to 1 year. There is no official list of eligible devices for updates as it is released after the stable release of OS by the manufacturers.
What can you do now? If you have eligible device register for developer program. If you don’t so just ‘wait and watch’ or purchase an eligible flagship above stated.
